Los Angeles’ shiny new SoFi Stadium has been announced as the location for WWE’s WrestleMania 37 in 2021, and Hollywood will prove a fitting venue for one of the most glamorous and movie-plot laden events in all of sport. The future home of the NFL’s LA Rams and Chargers will provide a spectacular setting and with Inglewood being handy distance for downtown, the Hills and the beach, will also provide a geographically appealing destination for fans who want to see more than just the wrestling.

Pioneered by Vince McMahon into what is now a global phenomenon – WrestleMania is the showpiece event for the all-conquering World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). The first ever WrestleMania took place at New York’s Madison Square Garden in 1985 and helped cement WWE as the preeminent force in world wrestling. This popularity was confirmed in what many regard as one of the truly great events – WrestleMania III at the Pontiac Silverdome in Michigan (that saw Hulk Hogan face off against Andre the Giant), which at the time was the highest attended indoor North American event with over 93,000 fans.

Since those halcyon days, WrestleMania has for many become an annual pilgrimage, with thousands of wrestling fans descending on the host city for several days of wrestling action. The big event is of course the centrepiece, occurring on the Sunday, but you’ve also got vastly entertaining support shows including Smackdown (Friday night), NXT Takeover (Saturday) and RAW (Monday), as well as WWE AXXESS, that usually takes place at the convention centre of whichever city happens to be hosting that year.

Less of a single event, Mania is now a festival of wrestling for fans to come together, party, buy merchandise, get autographs and of course see their heroes beat seven bells out of each other to the backdrop of a story line that any Hollywood screenwriter worth their salt would be proud of.

Bring on the next 37!
