Pittsburgh – otherwise known as the Steel City or the City of Bridges – is home to some of the most successful and passionate sporting franchises in major league sport. Although only having three out of the four sports (no NBA team), the ones they do have really make up for that! Few other cities can boast six Super Bowl titles, five Stanley Cup victories and five World Series appearances.
However, Pittsburgh is much more than a sports city and here’s why.

Firstly, there are some great sights to be seen. As its nickname suggests, Pittsburgh is a city full of bridges, 446 to be exact! The most famous of them been the Three Sisters Bridges that span the Allegheny River and these are particularly special to see at night when they are lit up. Visitors can also get a great view of the bridges and the city as whole from Duquesne Incline and the Monongahela Incline, you can even make a loop between the two with a nice walk of about a mile. Alongside the sights, we would also recommend visits to the Andy Warhol Museum, Carnegie Museum of Natural History and Schenley Park for one of its popular forest trails.

Now onto the food…a visit to Pittsburgh would not be complete without a signature sandwich piled high with fries and slaw from Primanti Bros. It’s not for the feint hearted but something visitors really shouldn’t be leaving without trying. Another Pittsburgh staple and definitely worth a try, is Essie’s Original Hot Dog Shop, established in 1960 in the shadows of Forbes Field, where you can pair some of the best hot dogs with one of hundreds of beers. It doesn’t stop with these two eateries though, Pittsburgh itself is brimming with sports bars so you can always find a great place to stop by.

Back to the sports. Pittsburgh is always regarded as one of the great US sports cities and that isn’t just down to the success of the individual team (although it helps). In terms of the football, Heinz Field provides a great setting by the river and our pregame ‘Sailgate’ is a great way to eat, drink and arrive to the game. Combine this with a downtown college football option, the Pittsburgh Panthers and you already have a fun filled sports weekend within a 3 mile radius of your hotel! If football isn’t your passion, then not a problem as the Pirates (MLB) and Penguins (NHL) also have their home stadiums in the downtown area and will be walkable from your hotel. The home of the Pirates, PNC Park also provides some great views of the Three Sisters Bridges, so you can watch a game and take in the view!

Whether you bleed black and gold or just want a great sports city to experience the game day atmosphere, then Pittsburgh is a perfect option. Get in touch now, via our request form and we can start putting together your dream trip to Steel City.
