The first leg of the American Triple Crown, The Kentucky Derby is steeped in traditions and has the distinction of been run uninterrupted for 144 years. Even in a year of Covid-19, the 2020 derby has been rescheduled to September to ensure this run continues and punters around the world can expect to hear the classic phrase “Riders Up!”

Often referred to as the most exciting two minutes in sports, the Kentucky Derby was founded by Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr after he travelled to England and France, witnessing the Derby and the Grand Prix de Paris. He returned home and set up the Louisville Jockey Club to raise money for building quality racing facilities in the city, the track would soon become known as Churchill Downs and the rest is history!

The Derby prides itself on it’s annual traditions and they play a big role in the atmosphere on the day. The mint julep – an iced drink consisting of bourbon, mint and sugar syrup – is the drink of the meeting and you’ll find an abundance of these been served. Alongside several julep’s, revellers also need some food and Burgoo is a classic Derby dish, it’s a thick stew of beef, chicken, pork and vegetables and is popular on Derby day.  You also have the blanket of red roses which is presented to the winner each year, a lush presentation consisting of 554 red roses which is presented by the Governor of Kentucky and has often led to the Derby been referred to as “The Run for the Roses”.

Outside of Churchill Downs, Louisville and Lexington both provide great options for down time and our packages include opportunities to visit historic stables including the opportunity to feed and pet former Derby winners. Along with the stables, you’ll also receive a guided tour and tasting (of course) at a famous Bourbon distillery, with Kentucky been the home of Bourbon, this really is a must do whilst your out there!

Whether you’re a keen follower of racing in the UK or just enjoy a day out to the races each year, The Kentucky Derby does not disappoint and provides a great social, exciting day. Get in touch with us here to discuss your own bespoke Derby package for 2021.
