Located in Southeast Texas and close to the Gulf of Mexico, Houston – otherwise known as Space City – has widely been acknowledged as America’s next great global city due to its medical and scientific excellence. Combine this, with a cultural diversity unrivalled in the country (over 90 languages spoken in the city) and you get a dining and music & arts scene that is, frankly, cool as hell!

Texas in general is famous for its great BBQ and Houston is no different, if you’re looking for that authentic BBQ style and service in a saloon then look no further than Goode Co. Barbeque who have several locations around town. But you can’t come this close to Mexico without sampling some of the best Tex-Mex cuisine around, we’re talking tacos, chili, queso and fajitas to name just a few. Interestingly, Houston is known to be the home of the fajita, the dish having been popularized by the restaurant Ninfa’s in the 1970s. Ninfa’s remains open to this day and a must try on your visit.

Outside of the fantastic food, Houston has much more to offer. Houston CityPASS is a great way to see all the major attractions in just one ticket including the Downtown Aquarium, Museum of Natural Science and the obvious main draw the Houston Space Center. Go behind the scenes at NASA and experience the past, present and future of human space exploration. An attraction quite literally out of this world.

Also, check out the buzzing theatre and museum districts in the city. The theatre district is seen as one of Houston’s crown jewels – set in the downtown area, you’ll find multiple performance venues as well as bars and restaurants that are all just a stone’s throw away from downtown hotels. A short trip on the Metro will bring you to the museum district and that is home to 19 different museums, split into four walkable zones and even if you don’t see them all then it’s definitely worth a visit.

As a sporting city, Houston is a great option across NFL, NBA and MLB with all three major league teams having recent success and regularly making the playoffs. In NFL, the Texans play at NRG Stadium, which when built was the first stadium to have a retractable roof, as well as a field that can be literally rolled out of the stadium! NRG itself is around 8 miles from downtown but is easily accessible using the city Metro (red line). Using public transport allows you to take full advantage of that all-inclusive pregame tailgate, which in Texas is honestly one of THE best!

If NBA or MLB is your passion, then the Rockets and Astros have their respective stadiums downtown. Both Minute Maid Park (Astros) and Toyota Center (Rockets) will be within an easy walking distance (less than one mile) from downtown hotels.

College football is also a great sports addition to a Houston trip, with local team the Cougars playing just south of downtown or, if you’re up for hiring a car and a bit of a road trip, Texas A&M Aggies offer an incredible college gameday experience just 90 minutes’ drive from downtown in College Station.

Whether you’re a Houston sports fan already or just looking for a different city with a great game day experience. Houston is a fantastic and arguably, lesser known option. Complete one of our request forms and we can get working on an itinerary for you!
